Types of conditional sentences

 

conditional type 0

if or when + simple present + simple present

 

conditional type 1

if + simple presnt + simple future

 

conditional type 2

if + simple past + would or wouldn't have / could or couldn't+ verb (inf)


conditional type 3 

if + past perfect + would have or wouldn't have/ could have or couldn't have+ past participle

 

      l Examples: 

conditional Type-0 

we use conditioner 0 to say that something is always true when or if something happens. We also use it to talk about General statements and scientific facts. 

1)  when he sees,he laughs. 

2)  when you open a school,you close a prison .

3)  if you heat ice it turns into water .

4)  if you put butter on fire it melts .

5)  when I'm free,I go to cybercafe .

 

conditional type 1 

It is predictive. We use it to say what may or may not happen in the future if a possible condition is met. The meaning is the future . 

 

1) if you are late, you will miss the train 

 maybe you will be late. then you will miss the train 

 

2) if she has a visa,she will travel abroad. 

 maybe she will have a Visa. Then she will travel abroad. 

 

3) if Maria has enough time,she will finish her homework 

maybe Maria would have enough time. Then she will finish her homework

 

4) if you go out,you will get wet 

don't go out it's raining. You will get to wet 

 

5) if you continue working you will get terribly tired 

don't continue working! you will get terribly tired 

 

Conditional type 2 

It is imaginative. We use it to talk about unreal wishes. 

Tough the tense used is the simple past the meaning is the the present. 

Normally we say I,he,she,it,was/ Wasn't. But in conditional type 2 we say i she he it were or weren't. 

 

1) i'm not a millionaire. I can't go to the moon 

If I Were A Millionaire, I could go to the Moon 

 

2) i'm not the bird. I don't fly 

If I were a bird, I would fly 

 

3) i'm not a little taller. I don't water the plant on the top shelf 

If I were a little taller I would water the plant on the top shelf 

 

4) ahmed coughs in the morning. it is because he smokes three packets a day 

If ahmed didn't smoke tree packets a day he wouldn't cough in the morning 

 

5) He can get a job in Germany because he doesn't speak German 

If he spoke German he could get a job in Germany 

 

6) he doesn't work carefully so he makes a lot of mistakes 

If he worked carefully he wouldn't make a lot of mistakes 

 

7) he's obese because he is greasy food 

If he didn't eat greasy food he wouldn't be obese 

 

Conditional types 3 

It is speculative. We use it to say what would or wouldn't have happened if something had or hadn't happened in the past. We can also use it to express regret about the past. The meaning is the past.

 

1) last week karim seasons come to the wedding ceremony because they didn't invite him. 

If they have invited him karim would have Come to the wedding ceremony last week. 

 

2) Rachid was sleeping and he didn't watch the race on TV. 

If he hadn't been sleeping he would have watched the race on TV 

3) James didn't have enough money. as a results he didn't buy clothes to his children 

If james had enough money he would have bought clothes to his children 

 

4) Gandhi organized demonstrations that's why he was taken to prison 

If ghandi hadn't organized demonstrations he wouldn't have been taken to prison. 

 

5)Selena didn't apply for the job because she didn't see the advertisement 

If she had seen the advertisement she would have applied for a the job. 

 

6) She didn't lose weight because she didn't follow a special diet. 

 If she had followed a special diet she would have lost weight thoughts. 

 

      l Exercises:

1) - (Third conditional) If the students (not/be) late for the exam, they (pass) .

2)  -(Third conditional) If the weather (not/be) so cold, we (go) to the beach.

3)  -(Second conditional) If she (have) her laptop with her, she (email) me.

4)  -(First conditional) If she (not/go) to the meeting, I (not/go) either.

5)  -(Third conditional) If the baby (sleep) better last night, I (not/be) so tired.

6)  -(First conditional) If the teacher (give) us lots of homework this weekend, I (not/be) happy.

7) - (Second conditional) If Lucy (have) enough time, she (travel) more.

8)  -(First conditional) If the children (not/eat) soon, they (be) grumpy.

9)  -(First conditional) If I (not/go) to bed soon, I (be) tired in the morning.

10)  -(Second conditional) If I (want) a new car, I (buy) one.

11)  -(Second conditional) If José (not/speak) good French, he (not/move) to Paris.

12) -(First conditional) If John (drink) too much coffee, he (get) ill.
